Life will never be the same

“Life will never be the same. Life is changing”

Fitting words for this new world we’re moving into. In 5 to 15 years, barring some widespread catastrophic world disaster, there will be technologies as mind-blowing as ChatGPT coming out every month. Yes, though ChatGPT has been over-hyped in some ways, but it has done something that’s never been done before, while defying the naysayers, who said it couldn’t be done.

Yann LeCun’s dominance/submission tweets: My thoughts

Yann LeCun — Chief AI Scientist at Meta recently made some apparently-controversial tweets. I thought some of the reactions were… silly, so here are my thoughts.

  1. “Humans are hardwired by evolution to be a social species with hierarchical structure,” he added. “This includes hardwired drives for dominance or submission.”

No lies detected. In my estimation, most people are the submissive types, or at least the “bitchy” submissive types, where they may hate their employer, for example, but then work for them for years, even decades, without doing something to change it, like, I don’t know… quitting? And don’t dare inform one of these types that they are submissive. Pretending things are different than they are is how they cope with life.I’ll add that I think a person can override their instinctual tendencies, or develop a different drive, based on life experience, personal resolutions, etc., but they may be happiest living the position they are wired for.

  2. “AI assistants will simply have hardwired drives to submit and not dominate.”
That is probably true for AI assistants in the foreseeable future. If it’s your assistant, it would make no sense to program it in any way other than to be submissive.
  3. “Why would people feel threatened leading machines that are smarter than them?”

Well, it all depends on the type of AI. Some forms would not really be more dangerous (e.g. evolve to kill or enslave humans) than the Excel application running on your computer. Other types might decided to stop listening to you.

This seems a classic case of someone stating some truth that the average person is uncomfortable with, so they stupidly “shoot the messenger” (hate, irrationally argue with, discredit, etc.), as if that will make the scary truth go away.

What?! Monster potato is actually a gourd?

A New Zealand couple, Colin Craig-Brown and his wife, found a very large,17 pound potato-looking thing in their garden. They expected it to be a world record potato, but Guinness World Records’ lab testing on the DNA determined it was more related to gourds. But, the closest match to gourds they had grown in their garden was cucumbers. It’s hard to imagine it being a cucumber or a gourd. Maybe it’s some sort of cancer-like growth of a plant part. Maybe it’s some sort of gall induced by insects, viruses or other microorganisms. It crossed my mind that it could be something fungus-related to. It’s definitely something unusual, and I would say abnormal. Not likely harmful, just ugly and abnormal. It’s always possible the DNA was contaminated too. Maybe a fruit in the gourd/cucumber family got buried during growth, and the unusual environment of being underground caused this weird shape and size? What do you think?

Elon Musk says bitcoin’s creator is Nick Szabo

Elon Musk speculates that Nick Szabo created bitcoin – that Mr. Szabo is the person behind the anonymous pseudonym “Satoshi Nakamoto”. This is another thing I would agree with Elon Musk about. Craig Wright is not Satoshi. Now surely Nick Szabo did have assistance and contributions, so he could truthfully say that it was not only him. I think Hal Finney was likely critical or at least very helpful. Adam Back may have been consulted, may have contributed directly, or at least helped inspire bitcoin with his Hashcash software.

Elon Musk guesses who bitcoin’s mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, might be

How much of all money is in bitcoin?

“The combined value of bitcoin was equivalent to just 2.9% of the world’s money.”
“All cryptocurrencies combined accounted for about 7% of the world’s money.”

That’s still pretty amazing, IMO, especially considering that the US and many other governments outlaw crypto’s most effective uses, and that the US federal government is determined to crack down further.

Craig Wright wins bitcoin intellectual property rights

Wow, well this was the dumbest court case in the world. Craig Wright is NOT the creator of bitcoin, yet he’s been awarded intellectual property rights… I’m not sure how far that goes. Hopefully, that just means he has a (wrongful) copyright on the whitepaper and nothing else. The real Satoshi may have to intervene.

This guy just doesn’t stop. I wonder if any documentaries have been made about him yet? I maintain my opinion that he is a fraud/imposter who assumed that real Satoshi was only Hal Finney. Since Hal became incapacitated, then died, Wright thought Satoshi was no longer alive to deny Wright’s claims. I think Wright eventually realized a member of the identity of Satoshi was still very much alive, but Wright was already too invested in his big lie. I think Wright’s motive was to create prestige to impress potential investors, and potentially profitable things like this copyright claim. I am guessing the real Satoshi was so libertarian that he didn’t believe in copyrights.
