We’ve run, jumped, and stomped all over the world of Super Mario, but, where in the universe is Super Mario EXACTLY? It’s virtual so it obviously DOESN’T exist, but if it did, could Super Mario world be in our solar system? And what do the planet’s dynamics reveal about Mario’s crazy jumping ability? Join Gabe as he takes us on a rick-roaring tour of our known universe as we search for the answer in this week’s SpaceTime!

Are featherless chickens really GMO/genetically-engineered?

Are these GMO chickens? Genetically-engineered without feathers... naked, or are they actually just conventionally bred?
Genetic modification or just conventional breeding?

Pictures of these creepy new chickens are going around the web, claiming these are genetically modified organisms (GMO), however, it is reported that these chickens were created through conventional breeding by an Israeli scientist. They were bred using a bare-neck breed of chicken (likely what’s called the “turken“) that’s been around for decades, that was also conventionally bred. In other words, barring any newer mutations, these naked chickens theoretically could have been bred 3000 years ago with an intensive breeding program with no modern technologies.

Sure they look creepy, but so do naked mole rats and manatees, yet they are totally natural, and in the wild, not bred by humans at all.

The scientist does have some good points – this could be a good hot weather chicken and could do a little bit to impact the environment less.

Why do humans need exercise?

A couple exercising by walking.

One might wonder, if exercise takes energy, why haven’t people evolved to no longer need exercise? My theory is that it’s because exercise has always been there and it was potentially useful. The energy was spent anyway, and since it was a constant, the body found uses for it, rather than evolving new mechanisms to accomplish all the things that exercise does for us.

I like the analogy of an ancient, thousand year old city with a river running though it. Over time, the inhabitants would develop many uses for the river and come to depend on it. They might wash themselves, their clothes, transport goods, catch fish, irrigate, siphon water energy and so many other things from that river.

Now, imagine that river suddenly dries up. The city would be in very bad shape as they are not adapted to the absence of the river. The city may dwindle as people die and migrate, though over some long period of time, the remaining inhabitants may adapt to new practices to thrive without the benefits of the river.

I think exercise with humans is much like this. Exercise has always been there, but has suddenly (rather abrupt, relative to the long evolutionary timeline) stopped, and therefore all those physiological and mental mechanisms that had made use of exercise are now suffering.

Will humans ever evolve to need less exercise? Perhaps. I would guess that some of that has happened already – that some individuals are healthier despite lack of exercise whereas others need more. I also suspect there could be more people tolerant of lack of sleep, slavery, clothing and other characteristics of civilization than existed in the stone age.

However, when you talk about any kind of human evolution, the evolutionary game has gotten very strange and complex with governmental, medical, societal changes and complexities that have arisen over the last century. The genes that perpetuate the most now may be way different than did as recent as the late 1800’s. Evolution is now so subject to ever-changing societal intervention that it blows the conventional Darwinian stereotypes of “survival of the fittest” out of the water, as “poorly fit” individuals are medically, culturally or governmentally enabled to reproduced at greater rates than they would have ever in human history.

Osama bin Laden has been killed

Osama bin Laden Dead Body
Osama bin Laden

According to sources, Osama bin Laden has been killed by U.S. forces. President Obama is expected to make an announcement at 10:30 PM EST May 1, 2011.

It is thought that Osama bin Laden had been hiding in the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

He was killed after a firefight with the US miltary JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command) at a compound outside the Pakistani capitol of Islamabad, after intelligence information revealed his position.

The US waited for DNA results to confirm the identity before going public with the news.

2030: China Owns America?

This is a must-see, from Citizens Against Government Waste. Regardless of your political leanings, you must admit this is a realistic scenario, some would say inevitable, unless the U.S. federal government takes a radically different approach to spending and borrowing real quick.

There is the trend, though history for things to get more complex, as culture, technologies, political structures and mechanisms get more complex. Therefore China “owning us” may be more a more complex, unclear and abstract scenario than historical instances of one nation conquering another, but a very real ownership nonetheless.
