SPACETIME IS BACK! And with this episode we welcome in Matt O’Dowd as the new host to rigorously take you through the mysteries of space, time, and the nature of reality. We’re starting off this new season with perhaps one of the most mysterious things of all — DARK MATTER. What is it? Where does it come from? And is it even real? Watch this episode of Space Time to find out!

Hey Spacetimers! The time has finally come – on this weeks episode of Spacetime we reveal the answers to our 2-Particle Challenge, as well as our winners! Unfortunately, Gabe must bid us farewell – but not before introducing (in the most epic way), Space Time’s new host!

ABOUT MATT O’DOWD:
Matt O’Dowd spends his time studying the universe, especially really far-away things like quasars, super-massive black holes, and evolving galaxies. He uses telescopes in space to do it, and if those aren’t good enough he sometimes adds entire galaxies as gravitational lenses. Matt completed his Ph.D. studies at NASA’s Space Telescope Science Institute, followed by work at the University of Melbourne and Columbia University. He’s now a professor at the City University of New York and an Associate at the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium.

The Science of Six Degrees of Separation

August 26th, 2015

Are all people on Earth really connected through just six steps?
There’s much more science in this than I initially expected. It turns out ordered networks with a small degree of randomness become small-work networks. This is why your acquaintances turn out to be more important in job searches and finding new opportunities than close friends.

DON’T SEND ME AN EMAIL anymore…
1. Do not send it directly to me unless you know me.
2. Send the email to someone you have met IN PERSON and know on a first name basis AND THEY KNOW YOU.
3. Make the subject line ‘Six Degrees of Veritasium’
4. Explain that you’re trying to get this email to me and ask them to forward it on to me (only if they know me IRL) or someone they know who might know me.
5. If your email reaches me by Sept. 1, 2015 I will email you back and ask for your address so I can send you a postcard.

Black holes! From Stephen Hawking to Interstellar, black holes are mammoths in the world of science AND sci-fi. But what exactly IS a black hole? Do events happen inside black holes? Are black holes really a hole? Are black holes really black?! Join Gabe on this week’s episode of PBS Space Time as he debunks popular black hole misconceptions, and rethinks what the term, ‘black hole’, even means. Thought you knew what a black hole was? Think again!

Obsidian dome, California
Panum Crater
El Capitan
The Pyramids of Giza
Toronto buildings
The Holocaust Memorial in Berlin

It’s time for another t-shirt challenge question! Make sure you’re brushed up on your math and high-school level physics before trying this one! There will be 5 winners from each challenge! Do NOT submit to both!

Email your answers to: pbsspacetime@gmail.com before 5pm NYC time August 24, 2015.

Make SURE you title your email: “Two-particle Newtonian gravity challenge”

For the Einsteinian challenge title your email: “Two-particle Einsteinian gravity challenge”

Good luck! And we will see you next week on Spacetime for Gabe’s final episode.

We all know tides have something to do with gravity from the Moon and Sun, but if gravity affects the motion of all objects equally, then how come oceans have large tides while other bodies of water don’t? It’s because your mental picture of the tides is probably WRONG!!! Join Gabe on this week’s episode of PBS Space Time as he sets the record straight on tidal force, gravitational differential and what role the moon actually plays in tides. Why don’t lakes have tides? Watch the episode to find out!

We’ve been through the first few episodes of our crash course on general relativity, and came out alive! But it’s officially “time” for CURVED spacetime. Join Gabe on this week’s episode of PBS Space Time as he discusses Newton and Einstein’s dispute over inertial frames of reference. Is Einstein’s theory inconsistent? Is gravity even a force???
